đą Apple Unveils iPhone Duo: First Foldable iPhone, Price, Features & Release Date
Apple has officially unveiled iPhone Duo, the company's first foldable iPhone and one of the biggest changes to the iPhone lineup in years.
The new iPhone opens into a large 7.6-inch display while retaining a compact 5.4-inch outer display when closed. Apple says it is the thinnest iPhone ever when opened.
With a starting price of $1,999 in the United States, iPhone Duo also becomes one of Apple's most expensive iPhones.
Here are the major features, price and release details announced by Apple.
Apple's first foldable iPhone
iPhone Duo introduces an entirely new form factor to the iPhone family.
When closed, the phone has a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display designed for normal one-handed smartphone use.
Opening the device reveals a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display.
Apple says the inner screen is 50 percent larger than the display on iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Both displays use the same aspect ratio so content can transition naturally as the phone is opened and closed.
The displays support ProMotion, Always-On functionality and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.
Designed to reduce the visible fold crease
Foldable phones traditionally have a noticeable crease where the display bends.
Apple has introduced a nano-texture finish on the Duo's inner display that is designed to reduce glare and reflections while making the crease less noticeable.
The inner display uses a custom polymer cover layer, high-strength glass, specialized adhesives and a titanium support plate.
Apple says the polymer layer offers up to 40 percent higher stiffness than comparable materials used in the industry.
More than 100 components in the hinge
The hinge is one of the most important parts of any folding smartphone.
Apple says the iPhone Duo hinge contains more than 100 components.
It is designed to support the center of the display when the device is opened while an integrated magnet system provides a secure closure when folded.
The phone itself is constructed using grade 5 titanium.
Ceramic Shield protects the rear, while Ceramic Shield 2 protects the outer display.
Apple also gives iPhone Duo an IP68 rating for splash, water and dust resistance.
A20 Pro powers the Duo
Inside iPhone Duo is Apple's new A20 Pro chip, the same generation of processor used in the iPhone 18 Pro models.
Apple says A20 Pro is manufactured using a 2-nanometer process.
The chip includes a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine.
According to Apple, the CPU is up to 20 percent faster than A19 Pro while the GPU is up to 40 percent faster and more power efficient.
Apple also claims up to 35 percent better sustained performance compared with iPhone 17 Pro.
Vapor-chamber cooling
Folding a powerful smartphone into a thin design creates additional thermal challenges.
Apple has therefore developed a custom vapor-chamber thermal-management system for iPhone Duo.
The A20 Pro chip connects directly to this cooling system, helping the phone sustain performance during gaming, multitasking and AI workloads.
Two apps side by side
The larger folding display is not being treated simply as a bigger iPhone screen.
iOS 27 introduces Split View on iPhone Duo.
For the first time on an iPhone, users can place two applications side by side on the inner display.
Users can swap between apps, open two windows from the same application and save frequently used app combinations.
Apple says applications including Netflix, Zoom and Slack are already taking advantage of the folding design.
Apple Pencil comes to iPhone
Another major change is Apple Pencil support.
Apple says iPhone Duo will support Apple Pencil with USB-C later this year.
Users will be able to write notes, sketch and mark up documents directly on either display.
Until now, Apple Pencil has primarily been associated with the iPad.
Touch ID returns on iPhone Duo
Interestingly, Apple has chosen Touch ID for authentication on its first folding iPhone.
Touch ID is integrated directly into the side button.
Apple says this provides consistent authentication whether the phone is folded or unfolded.
Users can also unlock iPhone Duo using a compatible Apple Watch.
Dual 48MP camera system
iPhone Duo includes a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera.
The main camera can capture images at up to 48MP resolution, while the standard shooting mode produces 24MP images.
An optical-quality 2x option is integrated into the main camera.
The Ultra Wide camera also supports macro photography.
Folding creates new camera possibilities
The folding design allows Apple to introduce camera experiences that aren't possible on a conventional iPhone.
Users can take high-quality selfies using the rear cameras while seeing themselves on the outer display.
Duo Preview displays a live camera preview on the outer screen so the person being photographed can check framing and positioning.
Kid Cue can display Peanuts animations on the outer display to help get a child's attention while taking a photograph.
The phone can also stand partially folded, allowing hands-free photos, videos and FaceTime calls without requiring a separate tripod.
4K Dolby Vision at 120fps
The 48MP Fusion Main camera supports video recording at up to 4K 120fps in Dolby Vision.
Apple has also introduced improved Cinematic effects, Audio Mix capabilities and 4K Dolby Vision HDR time-lapse recording.
Siri AI and Apple Intelligence
iPhone Duo is designed around Apple's latest generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI.
Apple says Siri can use personal context from information such as messages, emails and photos to provide more relevant assistance.
Siri can also understand information displayed on the screen and help users take actions related to that content.
On the Duo's large inner display, users can interact with Siri while continuing to view another application alongside it.
Apple says privacy remains central to the system, with processing performed on-device where possible and Private Cloud Compute used when additional processing is required.
Two batteries inside
Apple has placed one high-energy battery on each side of iPhone Duo.
Software manages the two batteries together as a single power system.
Apple rates the phone for up to 31 hours of video playback when using the inner display and up to 44 hours when using the outer display.
Apple also quotes up to 24 hours of usage when both displays are used equally.
Fast wired and wireless charging
Apple says iPhone Duo can charge to approximately 50 percent in around 20 minutes using a compatible wired charger.
With MagSafe or Qi2 wireless charging, Apple says the phone can reach approximately 50 percent in around 30 minutes.
Actual battery life and charging performance will depend on usage, accessories and operating conditions.
eSIM only worldwide
One particularly important change for international buyers is that iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide.
There is no traditional physical SIM-card slot.
Apple says eliminating the physical SIM mechanism provides additional internal space for battery capacity.
Apple says eSIM is supported by more than 500 carriers worldwide.
Anyone considering importing the Duo should confirm eSIM compatibility with their mobile operator before purchasing.
Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Apple's C2 modem
iPhone Duo includes Apple's N1 wireless networking chip.
It supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread.
Cellular connectivity is handled by Apple's new C2 modem system.
Two colors
Apple is launching iPhone Duo in two colors:
Star White
Night Sky
The titanium enclosure receives a mirror-polished finish, while the hinge cover uses a contrasting micro-blasted finish.
Storage up to 2TB
iPhone Duo will be offered with four storage capacities:
256GB
512GB
1TB
2TB
The availability of a 2TB version makes the Duo particularly interesting for users who store large amounts of video, photographs and other content directly on their device.
iPhone Duo price
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States for the 256GB version.
That places Apple's first foldable firmly in the ultra-premium smartphone category.
Reuters reported that the starting price is around $100 higher than comparable base-storage foldable phones from Samsung and Google.
The real buying decision, however, will depend on whether customers see enough value in Apple's combination of the folding display, iOS ecosystem, cameras, performance and productivity features.
Preorder and release date
Apple says iPhone Duo preorders will begin at 5 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday, October 16, 2026.
General availability begins Friday, October 23.
Apple says more than 70 countries and regions will be included in the first launch wave.
A further 28 countries and regions are scheduled to receive iPhone Duo beginning October 30.
UAE and India are in the first wave
For MalluKuwait readers, two nearby and relevant markets are already confirmed.
Apple specifically lists the UAE and India among the countries where iPhone Duo preorders begin October 16 and availability begins October 23.
This may be useful for residents who frequently travel between Kuwait, the UAE and India.
What about Kuwait?
Apple's initial announcement names more than 70 first-wave markets and specifically lists countries including the UAE and India.
Kuwait is not specifically named in Apple's published list accompanying the announcement.
For that reason, MalluKuwait will not speculate about an official Kuwait launch date or local price until Apple, authorized retailers or Kuwait telecom operators confirm them.
People considering importing the phone should also remember that iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide and should verify network compatibility before purchasing.
Is iPhone Duo Apple's biggest iPhone change in years?
Apple has entered the foldable smartphone market much later than several competitors.
That delay has also allowed the company to approach the category differently.
Instead of simply producing a conventional iPhone with a folding screen, Apple has redesigned significant parts of iOS around the larger display.
Split View, Apple Pencil support, dual-display camera features and the ability to use two apps simultaneously could make the Duo function somewhere between an iPhone and a small tablet.
The $1,999 starting price means it will not be a mainstream purchase for everyone.
But the significance of iPhone Duo goes beyond first-year sales.
Apple has now officially entered the foldable-phone market, potentially opening an entirely new branch of the iPhone family.
For buyers in Kuwait, the next things to watch are official local availability, authorized-retailer pricing, telecom support and how quickly the Duo reaches Kuwait after its international launch.
MalluKuwait will update readers when official Kuwait pricing and availability are announced.
